Kinesio Taping® For The Athletic Trainer

A Clinical Skills Workshop
by Martha Godfrey, MS, ATC, VATL

At a recent Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association meeting in Charlottesville, VA, I conducted a clinical skills workshop on Kinesio® Tape. The workshop was designed to be an introduction to the basic principles and application techniques of Kinesio® Tape.

The purpose of the workshop was to spread the word about what a great tool Kinesio® Tape would be for athletic trainers in any setting.
Unfortunately, the onset of snow sent many people home early, and so the total number attending was 16 for two sessions. Those who did attend were very interested in learning about Kinesio® Tape.

I started with a short Power Point presentation that included a brief history, Kinesio® Tape characteristics, benefits, and basic application principles. Conditions covered were: low back strain, lateral epicondylitis, and Achilles tendon strain/tendonitis. We also discussed the lymph edema technique for swelling, (taping for) scapular problems and shin splints.

I thought the workshop was a success and hope to do another at the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association meeting in May.
